A common question that I get is… ‘Which tools and apps do I use to make my videos?’ Here goes! From phone apps to more advanced software here are all the tools I use on a daily basis plus links to how I learnt to use them… (I learnt everything free from YouTube!) Videoleap I use the app Videoleap to do simpler edits where I don’t require any special effects. It’s a phone app where you can easily put clips together, add sound and text overlays. I use it to put together compilations like below and also any behind the scenes videos I make- https://www.youtube.com/shorts/eLTvTrUncQA See more tutorials on their YouTube channel- https://www.youtube.com/@Videoleap/videos Other phone apps to consider I have used Splice in the past and I use CapCut for subtitling videos if need. You have to pay for CapCut pro but I find their auto captions very useful and time efficient. The Adobe Suite The Adobe Suite is where I make 90% of my videos with a little help from Blender which I have referenced below. Here are the tools that I use. Premiere Pro Before 2020 I had zero knowledge of video creation/production but I was always drawn to visual effects videos from creators like Zach King and Kevin Parry. This lead me to Abode Premiere Pro. It was where I first started to learn to layer, mask and manipulate footage. After learning the basics of Premiere Pro for 6 months I realised that I wanted to pursue Visual Effects a little more seriously which is why I took the plunge and moved to Adobe After Effects. After Effects After Effects is the the tool that I use pretty much every day to make my video content, it’s a little bit like photoshop for video! Coming from zero knowledge of video editing and visual effects, learning these softwares was a little daunting at first but there are some fantastic channels that I have listed below that guide you through the process. At the very bottom of this page I have added a further list of channels that have helped me massively on my content creation journey so far. The main channels that I used to learn Premiere and After Effects- Cinecom Sadly these guys have stopped posting but their channel is filled with some incredible tutorials on how to use Premiere Pro and After Effects, from beginner to advanced. I have learnt so many effects from these guys and their videos are always really entertaining! https://www.youtube.com/@CinecomCrew/videos VFX Koliba More focussed on After Effects, Koliba has some really helpful breakdowns on popular VFX edits. https://www.youtube.com/@VFXStudioKoliba/videos Adobe Photoshop I have only been using photoshop more recently since they brought out the AI generative fill. This has come in super handy for expanding images, changing backgrounds and adding elements to environments by using reference images and/or text prompts. The edit below which went super viral across Facebook and instagram was created on After Effects but the background extension to sell the effect was created in Photoshop. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/takB1XgaZRM A really informative tutorial that I followed using generative fill and After Effects is linked below- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKE-aMGbmgk Blender (3d modelling and animation) I have always tried to prioritise my learning above everything else because quite simply that helps me make better videos. The more that you learn the more that you can do and also the more value you bring. I had played around with Blender a few times in the past but to be completely honest the whole software seemed so confusing and daunting I could never get moving with it but at the start of 2024 I decided I would schedule just an hour each day to do a tutorial and see where it took me. I’m still very much a beginner still but taking the time to push into a slightly different area of video creation helped me see new opportunities and possibilities with the content that I make, it also landed me extra brand/production work. One example of this was a video I made ahead of the 2024 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City, using blender I was able to create an effect with the flags that I would have even thought of or been capable of doing before doing the extra work. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m2mSYbTvyfk The main channels that I’ve used to learn and understand Blender- Ryan King Art Ryan King’s channel really helped me understand Blender better, I highly recommend you looking at his tutorials as he explains everything so thoroughly, its perfect for beginners through to advanced https://www.youtube.com/@RyanKingArt Fattu Tutorials Fattu Tutorials is a fantastic reference for learning interesting motions graphics and animations to mix into real world footage.
